Will I be home for Christmas on a FIFO roster?
Christmas is one of those dates you cannot casually move. On a FIFO or repeating shift roster, the answer depends on where your work block falls, when the last shift actually ends, and how much time you need to travel home.
Why Christmas can be tricky on rotation
Roster patterns repeat, but family plans happen on fixed dates. A 14/14 or 7/7 cycle may put Christmas neatly inside a break one year and in the middle of a work block another year. The same pattern can shift against the calendar as the year changes, so last year’s answer is not a reliable guide to this year.
Night shifts need extra care. A shift that ends at 06:00 on 25 December technically finishes that morning, but that does not tell you whether you can get home for breakfast, travel safely, or make a family event. The checker treats a shift ending on the event day as an edge case rather than assuming you are home. Actual arrival depends on your journey and handover arrangements.
Allow time to travel
Choose a travel buffer of zero, one or two calendar days before the event. Zero is optimistic; one reserves the previous calendar day; two allows more room for long journeys, connections or uncertain transfers. This is a planning allowance, not a flight-time estimate. If your roster is marked off but the buffer includes a work day, the result should not be treated as a guarantee that you will arrive on time.
Could leave help?
If a date falls in your work block or travel window, the checker may suggest the smallest leave request that makes the modeled dates feasible. It shows the specific dates and number of leave days, without counting ordinary rostered days off as leave. If no feasible request is found within the solver’s limits, it will say so rather than inventing a plan.
Proposed leave is not approved leave. Your employer’s decision, contract, staffing needs and published roster still matter. If Christmas is important to your family, check the dates early and ask your employer about the request well ahead of the holiday. Do not book non-refundable travel on the strength of a modeled roster alone.
Check your own rotation
The checker selects the next Christmas Day and includes Christmas Eve when it is still upcoming. Choose your real roster pattern and enter the first calendar day of a work block. If your employer has changed your schedule, use that current schedule as the source of truth.
